Abstract

This study aims to foster a culture of literacy among lower grade students at SD Negeri 1 Jatipancur through a daily reading habit program. The low interest and ability of first-grade students in reading, along with limited facilities such as the lack of a library, are the main challenges. Using a qualitative approach, this community service activity was carried out for 5 weeks (approximately 40 days) targeting 81 students in grades 1A and 1B. The methods used included direct observation, interviews with class teachers, and documentation. The implementation took the form of a daily reading literacy habit for a maximum of 10 minutes after class. The results showed an increase in active student participation, with an average attendance of more than 75%. Despite obstacles such as limited book availability and uneven student reading ability, this program succeeded in fostering positive reading habits. The active involvement of teachers and students was key to its success, and this program was successfully continued by class teachers even after the community service activity had concluded. Overall, this simple yet consistent intervention proved effective in building a culture of literacy in the elementary school environment.
